Intro
Toward the Surface
A series of light-based works, fueled by an exploration of aesthetic perception, attempting to strike a balance between representation and experiential reference.
Light, form, and the body coexist in a relationship of dynamic exchange that cannot be reduced to the eyes alone. Like the warmth of the sun on our skin, light, as medium and material, engages our entire body in the act of seeing. It organizes, directs attention, and makes form and color perceivable.
Looking up toward the sun while enveloped by water, I wondered about the plausibility of replicating this coupled visceral experience, spurring me to make work about that threshold with a devotional dedication. Making these images provided a ritual space while I observed the natural world within a prolonged liminality.
